CASE STUDY 1 — JACK AND JILL'S STORY
Jack, aged 75, and Jill, aged 70, live on a property 100km from Charters Towers. They are independent and do not claim a pension. They still own the grazing property though their unmarried older son, John (50), does most of the work. Jack and Jill's youngest son, Tom, (26) was born with a disability and has severe cognitive impairment. He has been well managed at home by his mother and father with no outside help. There is insufficient income for the elderly couple and their sons but they are struggling on regardless. Their married daughter, Jane (48) has 3 teenage children and lives in Charters Towers. Jane is also financially and emotionally stretched.
Jill is in good health, but recently has been having difficulty with her short term memory and is often confused.
Jack has always kept well except for minor ailments; however after not feeling well for weeks he was found to have lymphoma which is treatable with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. This medical treatment is provided in Townsville which causes problems with transport and accommodation.
During his father's illness, John initially looks after Tom. Tom becomes upset and aggressive and requires constant supervision and has to go into Charters Towers to stay with Jane. The demand of caring for Tom, as well as the worry about her mother and father, Jane becomes very stressed and needs support to help her cope.
In spite of the serious illness and extensive treatment, Jack makes a good recovery. However he requires regular medical treatment and his ability to return to his usual farm routine is seriously impaired. Jill constantly worries about Jack and their need to live closer to support services as they get older. Also weighing heavily on Jill's mind is the question of long term care of Tom.
