Hyde Park Medical Centre

Background & History:

Hyde Park Medical Centre is a group general practice founded in 1925, providing services to the central and western portions of the City of Townsville. We are in a purpose built facility only nine years old. We also are an accredited training practice for the Royal College of General Practitioners training programme and are a fully accredited general practice, being the first practice in North Queensland to achieve this distinction.

The practice is situated in an older part of the town close to the city centre.

The medical staff have admitting rights to two private hospitals, both located close to the surgery. After hours care is provided by a pager, carried by the principal doctors on a roster basis. Most of our patients choose to use the emergency department of the local private hospital. Townsville has a complete range of specialists available.

There is a pathology collecting rooms within the facility and a radiology facility at the private hospital, 100 metres away. There is a wide range of procedures available at the practice including surgical and diagnostic procedures. Among the equipment available we have a slit lamp for eye procedures and an operating microscope for ear toilet etc.Several of the doctors perform plastic surgery operations to the level of split skin grafts and rotation flaps. We also perform toe surgery and excision of a wide range of skin lesions including facial lesions. We also have a resident surgeon who provides expertise in more advanced surgical procedures such as vasectomies, carpal tunnel and other skin surgeries.

Full time registered nurses support the doctors in the practice.

The practice has recently installed Medical Director as our computer software package and this has a strong health promotion programme. We are using this to bring up to date our vaccination and health screening activities as well as using it for disease prevention and EPC activities.

Hyde Park Medical Centre is fully accredited with Australian General Practice Accreditation Limited. The practice is continuing a process of quality improvement including computerisation of medical records and a five year plan towards a paperless practice. Health promotion and the access of educational materials through the IT system is an important component of this.
