Townsville General Practice Network

Accreditation

TOWNSVILLE DIVISION CERTIFIED TO ISO9001:2000

On the 21st and 22nd June 2006 TGPN went through external audit to be certified against ISO9001:2000.

The long and sometimes arduous process (we do not need to stress this to all those practices that have gone through similar experiences!) had started a year previously when the Institute for Healthy Communities Australia (IHCA) was selected as the TGPN certification service provider. IHCA are affiliated with the University of Queensland. Quality Assurance Systems (QAS) were hired as the consultants for the process, which TGPN completed independently.

ISO9001 is a highly non-proscriptive standard. This has its advantages and disadvantages. The organisation has more freedom but less guidance.

Quality Manual

One major task was the creation of a Quality Manual to document the TGPN Quality Management System. Disparate policies and processes were identified and united in the one document.

Although TGPN systems were in a healthy state prior to accreditation, documenting and standardising these was still a substantial task. TGPN senior management always took the view throughout that the process was not a purely paper one – from the CEO down there was clear commitment to use the process to make TGPN an even better run and effective organisation for its members.

Results

The results of the audit were received on 6th July 2006. The IHCA auditor recommended TGPN be granted Certification to AS/NZS ISO 9001:2000. Indeed the report was quite complementary in many areas, with only small areas identified for improvement.

Certification demonstrates to third parties that TGPN is an organisation that complies with quality standards recognised worldwide. It adds to the credibility of TGPN in its function of representing members to external organisations. Additionally, certification will allow TGPN to use the IHCA Certification Mark on correspondence and other documents, subject to approval by IHCA.

TGPN has subsequently (July 2007 and July 2008) been re-audited and has been recommended for ongoing certification to the standard.
