Townsville General Practice Network

Collaborative Information Management System (CIMS)

Townsville Managed Health Network Grant Brief

CIMS: A managed private network built for health service providers to improve access to quality health care.

The Collaborative Information Management System (CIMS) is an innovative Managed Private Network (MPN) built by the Townsville General Practice Network (TGPN). CIMS will be the communication framework, utilising broadband technologies, to deliver services for all health service providers wanting to work in a sustainable, secure and integrated e-health environment.

The Australian Government’s Managed Health Network Grant Program provided $1.39M of funding to support this project.

The initial scope of the CIMS project is North Queensland including regional, rural and remote areas. CIMS is scaleable and will be made available to all health service providers within the Queensland Divisions of General Practice Network wishing to take advantage of this enterprise grade infrastructure. Access to CIMS will be made available to health service providers through their local Division of General Practice.

CIMS provides the foundation building block for the development of a communications model between subscribers within CIMS and Queensland Health, and potentially any other major health service provider organisations. CIMS provides the infrastructure necessary to underpin the smarter delivery of health services.

By 30 June 2007 the first twenty-five (25) subscribers will be connected to CIMS. These leading health service providers will provide TGPN with the demonstration sites required to encourage other health service providers adopt this major e-health strategy.

CIMS provides
  • Numerous opportunities to enhance communication and collaboration to better support continuity of care across health service provider organisations.
  • The standards based environment required to enable the rapid uptake of e-health strategies as they are developed;

CIMS needs broad based health service provider uptake to achieve its full potential and ensure long term sustainability.

More information is available from the Division CIMS Project team, and the text of this page can be downloaded as a pdf document.
